Another story from the archives of Wisconsin lore (ie, before this site was started)…

A quick hitter…in 2010, a 22-year old Wisconsin man who was charged with drunk driving was offered (and took) humiliation over jail time, after crashing his car into a water treatment plant.

Judge Paul Lenz offered Shane McQuillan the opportunity to wear a sign that read “I was stupid.” rather then go to jail.

Lenz offers this type of punishment frequently, apparently, saying “It’s a difficult thing to do if you think about it for yourself.” He claims most criminals take the jail time over the sign.

Personally, I would prefer that the driver be forced to think about their actions in the clink–but in Wisconsin, this type of punishment would be one way to cut down on the prison population, presumably.
