Not from our archives, per se, but from the archives of Wisconsin history…

In 2006, three Wisconsin men were arrested after attempting to dig up the body of a 20-year old woman who had been killed in a motorcycle accident the week before, with the intention of defiling the body.

Unfortunately, sexual assault charges against the men were dropped when a judge determined that Wisconsin law did not criminalize necrophilia.

The state Supreme Court finally weighed in on the matter, with a 5-2 decision that sex with the dead is, in fact illegal (since the dead can not consent), and reinstating the charges against the three men.

Two of the men were found guilty, while the third plead guilty in exchange for lesser charges (of course, he was later charged in a separate case of having sex with a 14-year old…so…yeah).
