Steven Gove is a 56-year old Manitowoc resident, who typically spent Saturday evenings delivering newspapers from his 3-wheeled bike.

Until Saturday, January 18th. On that evening, he had unfortunate opportunity to meet 20-year old Manitowoc man. Up close and personal.

As in, getting hit and going most of the way through his windshield personal.

Unphased, the driver didn’t even stop, continuing to run a stop sign, and hitting another vehicle before stopping the car outside his home. At that point, he finally realized there was a man sticking through his windshield.

“Who are you? What are you doing in the car?” the driver asked, before freaking out and correctly assuming “I’m going to jail, I’m going to jail.”

At which point, he locked his car doors, and went inside.

Shockingly, Gove proceeded to pull himself into the car, unlocked the passenger door, got out and started walking down the street. Police arrived, only due to a witness calling the accident in, and took Gove to the hospital where he was treated for glass in his eyes and cuts.

The driver was found at his home and treated at a hospital for a serious cut to his hand. He was facing (presumably now has been charged) several preliminary charges, including suspicion of drunken driving, suspicion of hit-and-run causing injury and suspicion of failing to render aid.

A little bit shockingly, this isn’t the first time that a story has made the press of a drunk driver hitting a bicyclist and not realizing it. What make it nearly unbelievable is that the prior incident happened only about an hour away, in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In that case, a 50-year old man was killed instantly by a driver, and left in the windshield for six hours before being discovered dead (by the driver). An autopsy showed he had died instantly; the driver was sentenced to 15 years.
